Solomon Northup is well-educated and talented in music. He lives with his wife and children in Saratoga, New York. One day, he is approached by two men who claim to work for a circus, and Solomon agrees to accompany their circus act on the violin for a short period. But after having a drink with the men, he wakes up dazed and bound and is confronted with the horrific truth: he is to be transported to the South as a slave.
