The story of the budding love between 17-year-old farm girl Kerstin (Ulla Jacobsson) and 19-year-old student Göran (Folke Sundquist) during a summer in the countryside became one of Sweden's biggest film successesever in Sweden and internationally, and came to set the standard for a long series of films and fuel the rumor of Swedes' open attitude toward sexuality. The famous nude bathing scene was considered natural and sensual, and contributed to a softening of film censorship in several countries.

If you include cinema and TV screenings, the film has probably been seen by more viewers than any other Swedish film.

The film won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and received the award for best music at the Cannes Film Festival.
