The Japanese 1630s are teeming with masterless samurai who, after a long period of peace, have lost their purpose. The solitary Hanshiro Tsugumo arrives at a feudal lord's residence in search of a worthy place to commit harakiri, but when the feudal lord mentions a younger samurai who arrived earlier, things take an unexpected turn...

Alongside Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece, HARAKIRI is one of the truly great samurai films. In 1963, it was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes, and in 2011, its long-standing cult status led to a successful remake, directed by Takashi Miike.

The lead role is played by Tatsuya Nakadai, best known for his leading roles in two of Kurosawa's most acclaimed films - "Ran" and "Kagemusha - The Shadow Warrior".
