Viking chieftain Hjorvard the Greedy is a widower. He has two wild sons, Glum the flighty and Garm the stupid, both notorious as troublemakers. The sons are expected home from a plundering expedition in the south, but when they arrive, they have no booty. Hjorvard's overlord, Olav the Sour, to whom he owes many years of taxes, has plundered their ships and is also demanding ransom for them. A strange envoy, Pollo, arrives from the Byzantine city of Cassinopel. Its ruler, Cassius, is looking for fighters for his gladiatorial games. Hjorvard quickly sells his sons to Pollo. But upon arriving in Cassinopel, both fathers discover that Pollo has deceived them and sold them on as slaves.
