Jan Troell's four-time Guldbagge Award-winning film about Nazi sympathizer Knut Hamsun
HAMSUN is the story of the most controversial author in Nordic history, the Norwegian Knut Hamsun (1859-1951).
At the age of 31, he was celebrated for his major breakthrough "Hunger" (filmed with Per Oscarsson in 1966) and at the age of 61 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, and there the story could have ended with a happy ending. But a few years later, Norway's national idol would instead become the country's most hated man. During World War II, he sympathized with the Nazis and traveled to Germany to meet Joseph Goebbels (to whom he gave his Nobel medal) and Adolf Hitler, and also placed himself at the disposal of Vidkun Quisling's government.
The hero was now called a traitor, and the punishment was harsh but fair when, after the war, he was sentenced to heavy finesand lost virtually everything he owned. HAMSUN is based on the book "The Trial of Hamsun" by Danish author Thorkild Hansen, published in 1978. The film is a co-production between companies in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Germany and was directed by Jan Troell, who paints a fascinating portrait of the famous author.
The film was a big hit at the 1997 Guldbagge Awards, winning the four major prizes - Best Film, Best Screenplay (Per Olov Enquist), Best Male Lead (Max von Sydow), and Best Female Lead (Ghita Nørby).
