Henry Hill grows up in the 1950s with a dream of becoming a gangster. He allies himself with boss Paul Cicero and befriends Tommy De Vito and the slightly older Jimmy Conway. The three spend all their time together and, over the years, climb higher in the hierarchy.

In the 1970s, Jimmy and Tommy commit the biggest robbery in the country's history, but become paranoid and begin methodically killing everyone involved. Henry also begins smuggling and selling cocaine behind Cicero's back on his own initiative.
