When the Nazis invade the Belarusian part of the Soviet Union in 1943, 14-year-old farm boy Florya eagerly enlists with the partisans. In his mind, he imagines a time of heroism and glory, but instead he is thrown into a nightmare world where he witnesses atrocities that defy description.

GÅ OCH SE is largely based on the horrific experiences of director Elem Klimov and co-writer Ales Adamovich during the war. The film is a permanent fixture on critics' lists of the best films of all time, but was on the verge of never being made when the script was banned from production by Soviet censors (a ban that was only lifted eight years later). With its groundbreaking cinematography and sound design, Elem Klimov's masterpiece has "inspired virtually every war film made in the last 35 years" (Slant Magazine).
