At the end of the 19th century, opera enthusiast Fitzcarraldo has a vision of building an opera house deep in the Amazon rainforest. Everyone except his faithful companion, brothel madam Molly, thinks he is completely mad. Confident of success, Fitzcarraldo sets off into the jungle aboard a large raft, but encounters obstacles when a mountain stubbornly stands between him and his dream. To achieve his goal, he decides to do the impossible—drag the entire boat over the mountain!

The filming of the reality-based FITZCARRALDO is one of the most talked-about in history, marked by major conflicts between director Herzog and the notoriously angry actor Kinski. Also notorious is the extreme realism demanded by Herzog. Instead of filming in a studio, the 320-ton boat was hauled over the mountain – for real! The film is a magnificent monument to a master's indomitable will.***** AFTONBLADET Acclaimed documentary film with and about Werner Herzog from 2022, covering the filmmaker's career and making an extra-long stop at the dramatic filming of Fitzcarraldo.
