Louis Feuillade was an early film pioneer with an undeniably profound influence, making hundreds of films during a short career that spanned only a few decades. Today, he is best remembered for his groundbreaking serials Fantômas, Les Vampires, Judex and Tih-Minh, four crime epics that have had an immeasurable impact on popular culture around the world.

Fantômas is an adaptation of a series of popular novels by Marcel Allain and Pierre Souvestre, starring René Navarre as the criminal mastermind of the same name. In the five episodes of the series, Fantômasmas is pursued by Inspector Juve (Edmund Breon) and newspaper reporter Jérôme Fandor (Georges Melchior) as he carries out his nefarious plans.Feuillade's crime series had an enormous influence on some of the greatest filmmakers of the 20th century, notably Fritz Lang and Alfred Hitchcock. They also played an important role in the development of the criminal masterminds and masked vigilantes that would become increasingly common in pulp magazines, film, TV, radio, and comic books in the coming decades, including Dr. Mabuse, The Shadow, and Diabolik.
