Fabian – Berättelsen om en moralist (DVD)
BERLIN 1931 – LOVE AND DECADENCE IN A TURBULENT TIME
Based on Erik Kästner's classic novel about interwar Germany.
The Weimar Republic in 1931. Disillusioned war veteran and aspiring writer Fabian escapes his dreary day job as an advertising copywriter and his nightmares by throwing himself into Berlin's twilight world of bars, brothels, and cabarets. In this environment, he meets Cornelia. Fabian's attempt to maintain the intellectual's cool view of relationships crumbles in the face of her beauty. But can happiness exist in uncertain times when both individuals and German society are driven closer and closer to a Faustian pact by desperation and a thirst for revenge?
With their wild mix of styles and techniques, frenetic editing and free-flowing timelines, director Dominik Graf and editor Claudia Wolscht give us a version of Erich Kästner's classic novel from interwar Germany that is both true to the period and hypermodern. This is film storytelling like avant-garde jazz, free in form and powerful in its emotional expression. Actors Tom Schilling (A Coffee in Berlin) and Saskia Rosendahl (Lore) are the emotional anchors of the story through their powerful portrayal of Fabian and Cornelia's doomed romance.
