Gus Van Sant's dreamlike, driving, deadpan second feature film—an addiction drama based on James Fogle's autobiographical novel - captures the disjointed structures and almost surreal absurdity of a life lived high on drugs. Matt Dillon, who oscillates between drug-induced detachment and nervous paranoia, plays the leader of a gang (along with Kelly Lynch, Heather Graham, and James Le Gros) who rob pharmacies for pills and travel through the Pacific Northwest of the 1970s while trying to escape sobriety and death. With a brilliant supporting role by counterculture high priest William S. Burroughs and a lyrical feel for the street scene in Van Sant's hometown of Portland, Oregon, Drugstore Cowboy cemented the director's status as a leading poet of outsiders.
