"EXCEPTIONALLY FASCINATING. YOU CAN'T TAKE YOUR EYES OFF IT" – Dagens Nyheter Especially when the voice belongs to Cynthia Hawkins, the enchanting grande dame who stubbornly refuses to have her voice recorded on tape. Much to the chagrin of many, of course. So when Jules manages to make a secret recording of the diva's acclaimed Paris concert, he becomes the target of a pair of very threatening music pirates. And when the tape is then exchanged for a cassette containing important evidence of a murder, even the city's most notorious killer sets out in pursuit of the terrified postman...

When DIVA was released in 1981, it caused a sensation. No one had ever seen anything like it. This marked the beginning of the French wave of visually spectacular films that came to be known as Cinéma du Look in the 1980s. Luc Besson and Leos Carax were two other leading figures. Five years later, Beineix followed up his influential film with the smash hit Betty Blue.
