In post-war Rome, we meet Antonio, an honest man who has been forced into unemployment for two years. But then he unexpectedly gets a job as a poster sticker, on the condition that he keeps his own bicycle. After pawning the last of the family's valuables, he proudly cycles off with his son early one morning. Rita Hayworth gazes seductively down from the movie poster he has just put up when disaster strikes. Someone steals the bicycle. Amidst the crowds on the sidewalks and squares, the desperate search begins in front of a sea of indifferent faces. They have only each other to rely on in their search for the bicycle, which means the difference between starvation and bread, between life and death.
