Their love was forbidden, but their passion knew no bounds.
A sensual drama about female liberation based on the romance between author Marie de Heredia and poet and photographer Pierre Louÿs.
Paris, 1895. Pierre Louÿs is a dandy and poet on the verge of recognition. Both he and his friend Henri de Régnier are madly in love with Marie de Heredia, the bold and charismatic daughter of their mentor. Although she feels the same way about Pierre, Marie marries Henri against her will in order to save her family's finances. Heartbroken, Pierre travels to Algeria, where he meets Zohra, with whom he shares both a passion for erotic photography and a tumultuous relationship.
A year later, Marie still has lukewarm feelings for her husband Henri, while Pierre returns to Paris with Zohra. Marie and Pierre resume their dormant flirtation, which becomes the beginning of an affair full of passion, betrayal, jealousy, and photography. But in order to find a way to build their future life together, they must now break with society's traditional rules. How far are they willing to go?
Lou Jeunet's passionate film about the French poet and eroticist Pierre Louÿs and the author Marie de Heredia is a balanced story about female sexual liberation and their complicated and passionate love story, in which both the male and female perspectives are given equal space. Written and directed by an all-female film crew.
