Jack Manfred (Owen) is an aspiring novelist who takes a job as a croupier at a London casino.

His girlfriend Marion (Gina McKee) disapproves of his new life, but Jack is happy with the change, forms close bonds with some of his colleagues, and begins to make progress with his writing.

He then meets the unlucky gambler Jani (Alex Kingston), who asks him to take part in a robbery at the casino—but is the croupier willing to take the risk?
