In April 2009, the American container ship MV Maersk Alabama was hijacked by pirates off the east coast of Somalia. It was the first case of its kind for Americans in over 200 years. To save his crew from being taken prisoner, Captain Richard Phillips offered to become a hostage. The pirates accepted the offer.
