Carter Nix is a respected psychologist, loving husband, and devoted father. In his neighborhood, he is considered the ideal father. Which he is. When he is himself. But inside Carter there are three other personalities, who are not nearly as pleasant. This is a result of the horrific experiments his father subjected him to when he was young. The worst is his evil "twin brother" Cain, who does not hesitate to murder if Carter is under pressure. For example, if his wife is unfaithful. Pray that this does not happen!

Brian De Palma has made yet another thriller that is every true film lover's wet dream, where we can revel in his aesthetic brilliance, his refined way of scaring us, and of course enjoy scenes that pay homage to other formidable films (such as Psycho and Peeping Tom). Carter is played by two-time Oscar nominee John Lithgow, a world champion at playing twisted, unpleasant characters, as in De Palma's Obsession and Blow Out.
