In the first season, Birgitte Nyborg Christensen (Sidse Babett Knudsen) is elected to power thanks to her winning combination of idealism and determination. But once she is in place as Denmark's first female leader, will she discover that the demands of power force her to compromise or change her perspective?

In the second season, two years have passed since Birgitte was elected prime minister, and she continues to deal with problems in both her private and professional life. After separating from her husband Philip (Mikael Birkkjær), she becomes jealous when he seems to be moving on. At the same time, tensions rise in parliament when Labour members begin to rebel, and Birgitte must make important decisions about Danish soldiers stationed in Afghanistan.

After spending time with her family, she decides to return to the political world by forming a brand new party and, with the help of journalist Katrine Fønsmark (Birgitte Hjort Sørensen), she hopes to regain her powerful status.
