Tsui Chik (Li) is a librarian who lives a quiet and unassuming life - or at least that's what he wants people to believe. In reality, he was once a member of 701 Squad, a group of elite fighters created through a failed super soldier project. Like his former comrades, his central nervous system has been altered so that he is immune to pain. When several of his fellow test subjects reappear and embark on a crime spree led by their former commander Hung Kuk (Patrick Lung), Tsui is forced to use his extraordinary abilities once again. He dons a costume and sets out to confront his past—as the avenger known as Black Mask.
Black Mask, based on the manhua by Pang Chi-ming and Li Chi-tak and heavily influenced by Bruce Lee's role as Kato in The Green Hornet, is one of the most entertaining films in Jet Li's filmography and stars in action orchestrated by Yuen Woo-ping, who would later win an Oscar for his work on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
