After Adam and Barbara Maitland die in a car accident, they find themselves trapped in their rural home, unable to leave the house. When the Deetz family and their teenage daughter Lydia buy the house, the Maitlands try to scare them away, but to no avail. Their attempts attract Beetlejuice, a ferocious ghost whose "help" quickly becomes dangerous for the Maitlands and the innocent Lydia.

After a family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Lydia, still haunted by Beetlejuice, has her life turned upside down when her teenage daughter Astrid accidentally opens the portal to the realm of the dead.
