Redmond Barry is an Irish country boy who falls in love with a wealthy local girl and is then tricked by her family into leaving town. Disillusioned by love, the heartbroken young man embarks on an adventure that leads him to serve in the Seven Years' War, become a professional gambler, and eventually rise to the upper classes of society when he meets and marries the beautiful Lady Lyndon. Despite the luck that has brought him such wealth, it is this final step, the cynical choice to marry for social advancement rather than for love, that leads to his downfall.
