When young first-time offender Ron Decker is sentenced to two years in one of the country's toughest prisons, he finds himself in a world where violence is the only way to survive. After a violent riot, Earl Copen takes Ron under his wing. Earl is a veteran who has spent most of his life behind bars. He has managed to manipulate the prison system to his advantage and is respected by both the most feared inmates and the corrupt guards.

But sometimes even the respect of others can make you a prisoner in the closed prison community. Ron soon discovers that life behind bars is not about rehabilitation. It's about survival.
