Paul Schrader, who recently wrote the screenplays for Martin Scorsese's timeless classics Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, took the director's chair for the third time with American Gigolo from 1980, a captivating tale of intrigue and deception set against the backdrop of sensual late-70s Los Angeles, with Richard Gere in a breakthrough role.

 

In a world of wealth and desire, exclusive male escort Julian Kay (Gere) offers his love and attention to women in need. But when a client, the wife of a sadistic financier, is found dead, all eyes turn to Julian as the prime suspect. Julian realizes he is being falsely accused and fights to prove his innocence, determined to solve the mystery behind the plot. The deeper he digs into the case, the more he is forced to confront his own identity.

 

American Gigolo is a feast for the senses thanks to John Bailey's cinematography and Giorgio Armani's costume design, not to mention the soundtrack by the "father of disco" Giorgio Moroder, including the Grammy-nominated anthem "Call Me" by Blondie. Starring Lauren Hutton, Hector Elizondo, and Bill Duke, American Gigolo is presented here in a stunning 4K remaster and packed with bonus features.
