Italian filmmaker, novelist, and poet Pier Paolo Pasolini (Salò, or: The 120 Days of Sodom, The Gospel According to Matthew, The Decameron) shook the film world with his raw yet elegant depictions of Roman street life, thereby establishing a new direction for Italian cinema: a new neorealism.

The Rome's miserable streets, Accattone's eponymous pimp (played by Franco Citti, one of a remarkable group of local non-professionals) lives a hand-to-mouth existence on the very fringes of society: prostitution, shoplifting, exploitation. When his prostitute Maddalena is arrested and put in prison, the pimp's income decreases and he is forced to confront his own existence.

Accattone is one of Italy's foremost authors and combines a fascination with poverty, sexual mores, and society's methods of capture with a sense of humanity and sanctity rarely seen in film. Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Pasolini's debut alongside his 1965 feature-length documentary Comizi d'amore [Love Meetings] in a special double-format Blu-ray + DVD edition.
