Directed by Carol Reed (The Third Man) with Celia Johnson (Brief Encounter) and Diana Dors (Yield to the Night). In a lower-class neighborhood in London with small shops, street vendors, and flea market sellers, Joe, a little boy, lives with his mother, Joanna (Celia Johnson), who works in and lives above Kandinsky's tailor shop. Joe is innocent and sincerely determined to help fulfill the wishes of his poor, hard-working neighbors. When Joe hears from Mr. Kandinsky that a captured unicorn can grant any wish, he uses all his pocket money to buy a calf with a horn, believing it to be a unicorn. His subsequent efforts to realize his dreams demonstrate the power of hope and will despite adversity.
